Amazon Kindle Oasis review: For the serious reader

The Kindle Oasis is an interesting product because, instead of refining its current range of devices, Amazon has chosen introduce it as an even more premium line, sitting above the rest of the Amazon Kindle e-reader range.

The Kindle 2016

The premise with the Oasis is that Amazon believes the Kindle should get smaller and lighter up to a point where it is like reading from a piece of paper. I'm not sure about this, but it makes sense to us from a technology perspective and we're sure Amazon has done its research.

The Kindle Oasis is a niche device and starts at £270 for the Wi-Fi only version, so a high-end e-reader like this needs to have a reason to be – and Amazon clearly believe that the lack of weight will appeal to readers.

There's almost nothing to the Oasis; it feels featherweight (although is a similar minor heft to many non-phablet smart phones at 131g) and you can easily balance it on one hand. The 3.4mm thickness of the screen part seems rather incredible compared with other handheld devices.

However, without the included battery cover case it feels almost too delicate. And that's not good for those of us who expect to take our Kindles everywhere we go. But it is sturdy enough, as the internal structure of the Kindle Oasis has been treated to add resilience.

Even so, the inclusion of the charging case is no doubt a key part of keeping the Kindle Oasis in pristine condition. And it has a another use, too, with the considerable extension to battery life that the charge case affords, we are talking weeks!

The controls are so simple – whether you prefer touch or physical buttons, you're catered for, while the controls are reversible depending on whether you're right or left-handed.

The display is incredible, we haven't noticed a huge difference between the Oasis' display and the Kindle Paperwhite's under different lighting conditions but our test have by no means been exhaustive. We certainly have had no problem seeing a clear and bright screen in dark or light conditions. The night light is adjustable.

The new sans-serif Amazon Ember font is an excellent choice and pleasure to look at as we read in ease and comfort.

Verdict

The Kindle Oasis is an unashamedly premium product that hard not to love, the Kindle Paperwhite is significantly cheaper and is worth considering if you are looking for an ereader. But this the top-of-the-range Kindle that says you're a serious reader.

Have you bought the Kindle Oasis, what are your experiences?
